Introduction
Addis Ababa University, Department of Biology, has been one of the ARPPIS MSc Sub-regional centres since 1998. The graduate programs of the department of Biology have contributed to alleviate the shortage of staff in newly founded colleges and universities in different parts of Ethiopia. The department also provides skilled and qualified staff to the several research institutions in the country. The demand for research biologists in leadership positions in agriculture, industry, health and environment has also led to an increased demand for qualified personnel.
The MSc Program in Biology
There are 7 departmental streams in Biology, namely: Applied Genetics, Applied Microbiology, Botanical Sciences, Ecological and Systematic Zoology, Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Biomedical Sciences and Insect Sciences. Each of the streams offers MSc programs comprising of coursework and thesis.
General Objective of the MSc Program
- The main objective of the MSc program is to satisfy the national and regional demand for specialized biologists who would:
- Become instructors at secondary and tertiary educational institutions
- Work as professionals and researchers in health, agriculture food and environment sectors and support development efforts in the above fields in their respective countries.
Specific objectives of the MSc Program
- To produce trained personnel that is capable of taking up leadership in research institutions and industries and government ministries.
- To upgrade the qualification of teachers and researchers in higher learning and research institutions
- To produce graduates that are able to fill the manpower needs of the country in the biological, health and agricultural sectors
- To produce graduates that can play a significant role in society in promoting scientific tenets in the management of natural resources, conservation of the environment and control of pandemic diseases.
Admission requirements
- BSc degree in Biology and related disciplines
- Satisfactory performance in the entrance examination
- Meet the general AAU Admission requirements
Graduation Requirements
A minimum coursework of 24 credit hours and thesis work (6 credit hours) is required. The candidate must score a cumulative GPA of 3.00 in the course work and a pass grade in the MSC thesis work.
